Building GA4 Audiences That Actually Help You Make Decisions

GA4 audiences aren't just for Google Ads retargeting. Used well, they're one of the most powerful analytical tools available — letting you compare behaviour across completely different visitor groups.

Most people who use GA4 audiences only think about retargeting: create a list of people who visited the pricing page, show them ads. That's legitimate, but it's a fraction of what audiences are useful for.

The more interesting use of GA4 audiences is analytical: building segments that let you compare how different groups behave on your site, and using that comparison to make product and marketing decisions.

What an Audience Actually Is in GA4

A GA4 audience is a group of users who meet a specific set of conditions — based on their attributes (location, device, new vs. returning), their behaviour (pages visited, events triggered), or their context (traffic source, campaign).

Audiences are dynamic. As users meet or stop meeting the conditions, they enter or exit the audience. You define the membership duration — by default, users stay in an audience for 30 days from their last qualifying event.

The Audiences Worth Building First

Signups / Customers. Create an audience of users who triggered your purchase or signup conversion event. This is your ground truth — the people your whole funnel is trying to create. Analysing their behaviour before conversion tells you what the path to becoming a customer looks like.

High-intent visitors. Users who visited your pricing page, your demo page, or your features page. These are your most likely future customers. What did they do before hitting that page? What content did they read?

Blog readers. Users who visited at least 3 blog posts. This is your engaged audience, distinct from one-time organic visitors. Do they convert at a higher rate than average? Do they return more often?

Users from specific campaigns. If you run a major campaign, create an audience that includes users who arrived via that campaign's UTM parameters. Compare their downstream behaviour to your average visitor.

Mobile-only users. Useful for diagnosing mobile experience issues. If mobile users convert at half the rate of desktop users, this audience helps you investigate where in the funnel the drop-off happens.

Using Audiences for Comparison Analysis

The most powerful use of audiences in GA4 is as comparisons in Explore reports. Here's how:

1. Go to Explore and open a new blank exploration

2. Under Segments, add your audience as a segment (you can compare up to 4 at once)

3. Add a funnel or path visualisation

4. Compare how different audiences move through your conversion funnel

A concrete example: create segments for "Visited pricing page" and "Did not visit pricing page" and compare their conversion rates. You'll likely find the pricing page visitors convert dramatically higher — which tells you that getting more people to the pricing page is a priority.

Or compare "Organic search visitors" vs. "Paid search visitors" through the same funnel. If organic visitors convert at 5% and paid at 1.2%, your paid targeting needs attention.

The Technical Limitation to Know

GA4 audiences are processed on a delay — usually 24–48 hours after users qualify. This means audiences aren't real-time. Don't use them for same-day analysis.

Also: audiences only track users forward from when the audience was created. If you build an audience today for "users who visited the pricing page," it won't include anyone who visited that page yesterday. Build audiences early, before you need them.

Audiences vs. Segments in Explore

Audiences (defined in Admin) and Segments (defined inside Explore) are related but different:

Audiences persist and can be used for Google Ads targeting. They have the 24–48 hour processing delay.

Segments in Explore are ad-hoc and immediate — you define conditions inside the report and the data is calculated on the spot. Use Explore segments for quick analysis; use Audiences for persistent analysis and ad targeting.

For most analytical purposes, building an Explore segment is faster and more flexible than creating a formal Audience. Create formal Audiences primarily when you want to use them for advertising or when you want to track a group consistently over months.

Audiences for Product Decisions

Here's where audiences become genuinely strategic:

Build an audience of users who completed your onboarding but churned (stopped having sessions) within 30 days. Compare their behaviour to users who stayed active for 90+ days.

What content did retained users view? Which features did they engage with? Which pages did churned users visit in their last session?

These comparisons often reveal insights that no amount of customer surveys can give you — because they show actual behaviour rather than stated preferences.

The same framework works for content: build an audience of visitors who converted from content, and compare their reading patterns to visitors who converted from search. You'll likely find they read more pages and spent more total time on the site. That informs your content investment.


GA4 audiences are underused because most people stop at "create an audience for retargeting." The analytical layer — comparing how different groups behave and converting those observations into decisions — is where the real value is. Start by building three audiences: your customers, your high-intent visitors, and your most engaged content readers. Then spend a month watching how they differ. What you learn will change how you think about your funnel.
