Why GA4 Is Hard (And What to Do About It)
Google Analytics 4 is powerful. It's also genuinely confusing — even for people who've used Google Analytics for years. Here's why, and how to get clarity without the pain.
If you've upgraded from Universal Analytics to GA4 and found yourself staring at an unfamiliar interface wondering where everything went — you're not alone.
GA4 is a fundamentally different product. It's not just a UI refresh. The entire data model changed. And that's both its biggest strength and its most significant obstacle for the business owners who just need to answer a simple question: is my site working?
The Data Model Shift
Universal Analytics was built around sessions and pageviews. GA4 is built around events. Every user action — a pageview, a click, a form submission, a scroll — is now an "event" with parameters attached to it.
This is more flexible and more powerful. It also means the familiar reports you relied on — Acquisition > Overview, Behavior > Landing Pages — don't exist in the same form. Everything had to be rebuilt from scratch, and Google made some choices in the UI that make common questions surprisingly hard to answer.
Three Things That Trip Everyone Up
GA4 replaced bounce rate with "engagement rate" — the percentage of sessions that lasted more than 10 seconds, had a conversion, or had 2+ pageviews. Technically more sophisticated. Practically confusing, because your old benchmarks don't translate.
In Universal Analytics, every goal you set up counted as a conversion. In GA4, you have to explicitly mark events as "conversions" in the interface. Many businesses upgrade to GA4 and wonder why their conversion count dropped to zero — they just forgot this step.
The most useful reports in GA4 — the ones that let you dig into specific funnels, cohorts, and segment comparisons — are in "Explore," a section many users never find. The default reports you see in the sidebar are a simplified subset of what GA4 can actually do.
The Deeper Problem
The deeper problem isn't any single feature. It's that GA4 was designed for data analysts, not business owners.
The people who get the most out of GA4 are the ones who know how to build custom explorations, understand event-based data models, and have time to dig. For everyone else — the founder checking their site before a product launch, the marketer who needs to know if last week's campaign worked — GA4 is often more noise than signal.
What Actually Helps
Set up a simple conversion event. If you have a contact form, a checkout, or any key action on your site — mark it as a conversion in GA4. Go to Admin > Events, find the event, and toggle "Mark as conversion." This unlocks the conversion metrics throughout your reports.
Use the Acquisition > Traffic Acquisition report. This is your most useful default report. It shows sessions by source/medium, with engagement rate and conversions. Bookmark it.
Build one Explore report that matches your business. If you're ecommerce, build a funnel from session to product view to purchase. If you're lead gen, track session → form start → form complete. Save it. Come back to it every week.
