Using GA4 Data to Improve Your Landing Pages (Without Guessing)

Landing page optimisation without data is just opinion. Here's how to use GA4 to identify exactly what's wrong with underperforming pages — and prioritise the fixes that will move the needle.

"Our landing page needs to convert better" is the kind of vague goal that leads to months of guessing. You change the headline. Nothing changes. You change the button colour. Nothing changes. You add a testimonial. Maybe something changes?

Data-driven landing page optimisation starts with a specific diagnosis, not a hypothesis. Here's how to build that diagnosis using GA4.

Start with the Landing Pages Report

Go to Reports > Engagement > Landing Page. This shows you which pages people land on first when they arrive at your site.

The columns to focus on:

  • ·Sessions: How much traffic is hitting this page?
  • ·Engagement rate: What percentage of sessions are engaged?
  • ·Conversions: How many conversion events did this page trigger?
  • ·Conversion rate: Conversions ÷ sessions

Sort by sessions to find your highest-traffic landing pages. Then sort by conversion rate to find your best and worst converters. The pages with high traffic and low conversion rate are your highest-leverage opportunities.

Diagnosing an Underperforming Page

Once you've identified a page that should be converting better, the diagnosis process has three steps.

Step 1: Check where traffic is coming from.

Add a secondary dimension of "Session default channel group" to the Landing Pages report. You might find that the page converts at 4% for organic search but 0.8% for paid social — which means the problem is traffic quality and audience mismatch, not the page itself.

Step 2: Check where people go next.

In Explore, open a Path Exploration. Set the starting page as your underperforming landing page. Look at what users do after they arrive.

If most users leave immediately (the next step is an exit), the page has a relevance problem — visitors arrived with an expectation that the page didn't meet. The fix is usually in the headline and above-the-fold messaging.

If users scroll to other pages on your site, the page has a conversion problem — visitors are interested but something is stopping them from taking the desired action. The fix is usually in the CTA, the offer clarity, or the friction in the conversion flow.

Step 3: Check scroll and engagement events.

If you have scroll depth tracking set up (via GTM), filter by this landing page and look at the scroll events. Are users making it to your CTA? If 80% of sessions never reach the CTA because they bounce before scrolling halfway down, that's a page length or hook problem, not a CTA problem.

The Three Most Common Landing Page Problems (and Their GA4 Signatures)

High traffic, low engagement rate (under 30%)

Symptom: Visitors are arriving and leaving within seconds.

Cause: Usually a relevance mismatch — the ad or search result that drove the visit set an expectation the page doesn't meet.

Fix: Align the page headline with the exact query or ad copy that's driving traffic. The more literal the match, the better.

Decent engagement, but low conversion rate

Symptom: People are spending time on the page but not converting.

Cause: Usually a weak or unclear CTA, a trust gap (no social proof, no clear value proposition), or friction in the next step.

Fix: Check if your CTA is visible above the fold. Add a customer testimonial or key credential near the CTA. Simplify what happens after they click.

High conversion rate on direct traffic, low on paid

Symptom: The page works great for people who know you but not for cold traffic.

Cause: The page assumes too much knowledge of your brand, product category, or problem.

Fix: Add context for cold visitors — what category are you in, who is this for, what problem does it solve. Don't assume they've heard of you.

Building a Landing Page Optimisation Roadmap

Pull your landing page conversion data monthly. Sort your pages into three buckets:

High traffic + high conversion rate: Don't touch these. Protect them from unnecessary redesigns. Consider driving more traffic to them via paid or internal linking.

High traffic + low conversion rate: These are your priorities. Run one change at a time, give it two weeks, measure the result.

Low traffic + any conversion rate: Don't optimise yet. Fix your traffic acquisition for these pages first. Conversion rate on 50 sessions a month is statistically meaningless.

A Note on Sample Size

One of the most common optimisation mistakes is making changes based on too little data. If your landing page gets 200 sessions a month, you need several months to see whether a change had a real effect.

The rule of thumb: you need at least 100 conversions per variant to reach statistical significance in an A/B test. If you can't reach that threshold, focus on larger traffic drivers first or use qualitative methods (session recordings, user interviews) instead of quantitative testing.


Landing page optimisation with data is fundamentally different from without it. Data doesn't always tell you exactly what to fix, but it almost always tells you where the problem is. Is it a traffic quality problem? An engagement problem? A conversion problem? Once you know which layer is broken, the fix becomes a lot more obvious — and a lot less dependent on guessing.
