How to Know Which Blog Posts Actually Drive Business Results
Most content analytics stops at pageviews. But pageviews don't pay the bills — conversions do. Here's how to connect your content to revenue-driving actions in GA4.
Publishing content without measuring it properly is like running ads without tracking clicks. You know you're spending time, but you have no idea what's working.
The mistake most content-driven businesses make is measuring the wrong thing: pageviews. Pageviews tell you what got attention. They don't tell you what drove signups, sales, or any other outcome that actually matters.
Here's how to measure content performance properly in GA4.
Step 1: Define What "Performing" Means for Your Content
Before you open any report, decide what you're trying to measure:
Direct conversions. Did someone read the post and then sign up or buy? This is the clearest signal but often underestimates content's influence, because buyers rarely read one post and convert immediately.
Assisted conversions. Was this post part of the path that led to a conversion? A piece of content might not be the last click before signup, but it might be the reason someone learned about you. GA4's attribution reports capture this.
Engagement depth. Did people scroll through the whole post? Spend meaningful time on it? These are leading indicators that the content is resonating, even if it doesn't convert today.
Return visits. Did the content bring people back? Readers who return multiple times are demonstrating a level of trust that almost always precedes conversion.
Finding Your Best-Performing Content in GA4
Go to Reports > Engagement > Pages and Screens. Sort by any of the following depending on what you care about:
Average engagement time: Which posts are actually being read vs. skimmed? A post with 50,000 views and 12-second average engagement time is not performing. A post with 800 views and 4-minute engagement time is.
Conversions: If you've set up a signup or purchase event as a conversion, this column shows which pages are directly driving it.
Views per user: Posts with high views per user are either being re-read or shared within a session. Both signals are worth following up on.
Setting Up Content-Specific Conversions
To measure content properly, you need a scroll-depth event or an engagement conversion. Here's the simplest approach:
In Google Tag Manager, set up a Scroll Depth trigger that fires at 90%. Create a GA4 Event tag that sends content_read when someone scrolls 90% of any blog post. Mark this event as a conversion in GA4.
Now you can see in the Pages report which posts are driving "content_read" conversions — meaning people who actually finished reading. This is a much better proxy for content quality than pageviews.
Tracking the Path from Content to Conversion
This is the advanced move: understanding how content fits into the buyer journey.
Go to Explore > Path Exploration. Start with any blog post as the starting node. Then look at what pages users go to next — and next after that.
You'll often find patterns like: blog post → pricing page → signup. Or: blog post → another blog post → homepage → signup. These multi-step paths show you which content is functioning as entry points to the conversion funnel vs. which posts are dead ends.
The Attribution Report for Content
Go to Advertising > Attribution > Conversion paths (if you have conversions set up). Filter by "Organic search" or by specific pages.
This shows you which content pieces appear in the conversion paths for your business — not just as the last touch, but anywhere in the journey. A post that appears in 40% of conversion paths but rarely converts directly is still enormously valuable.
Practical Monthly Content Audit
Every month, pull this simple list:
1. Your top 5 posts by pageviews
2. Your top 5 posts by conversion rate
3. Your top 5 posts by average engagement time
If a post appears on all three lists, it's your best performer — produce more content like it and update it to keep it fresh.
If a post has high views but doesn't appear on the conversion or engagement lists, it's attracting the wrong audience or failing to make the case for your product. Revise the content, the CTA, or both.
If a post has high conversion rate but low traffic, it's punching above its weight — consider whether you can drive more traffic to it through internal linking, SEO optimization, or promotion.
Content without measurement is creative writing. Content with measurement is business strategy. The gap between the two is usually just a few hours of setup in GA4 and GTM — and it changes how you make every decision about what to write next.
